Thursday Thirteen (#1)

Here is our first Thursday Thirteen... we thought we would do it about our home state of Alabama.

1. Alabama is also known as the Heart of Dixie.
2. Alabama introduced the Mardi Gras to the western world.
3. Alabama became the 22nd state on December 14, 1819.
4. The word Alabama means tribal town in the Creek Indian Language.
5. At the Battle of Mobile Bay Admiral David Farragut issued his famous command, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead." The even occurred on August 5, 1864.
6. Audemus jura nostra defendere is the official state motto. Translated it means "we dare defend our rights."
7. The state blue quartz is the state's official gemstone.
8. Alabama workers built the first rocket to put humans on the moon.
9. The Confederate flag was designed and first flown in Alabame in 1861.
10. Montgomery is the capital and the birthplace of the Confederate States of America.
11. Among famous natives & residents are Hank Aaron, Tallulah Bankhead, Nat King Cole, Helen Keller, Harper Lee, Hank Williams, Jesse Owens, Willie Mays, Courtney Cox-Arquette and Coretta Scott King.
12. State Nickname : Yellowhammer State
13. Famous feline residents : Prince Muddy Paws, Myst and Dandelion, Fancidots Gang and US!!!
